CLASSROOM OF THE WEEK: The preschool classroom at Discovery Preschool Center at Coral Springs
(Coral Springs, FL) has been discussing diversity and differences. The children have been learning about individuality and talking about what makes each person unique. To wrap up the lesson, each student created a clay sculpture of themselves. They talked about hair color and length, eye color, skin color and other distinguishing features. Using a mirror, they described their own characteristics. With clay, yarn, paint and other art supplies, the little artist got to work! After shaping their face and letting it dry, they added eyes, lips, a nose and color to their clay face. When each child was finished, they were very excited about seeing all of the differences between sculptures. As a class and with the help of their teachers, they added up how many people had which eye or hair color and made a chart to record the differences.
