Signing with babies is a unique way to communicate with babies before they are able to speak words on
their own. Dr. Joseph Garcia who developed Sign with your Baby recommends that we start signing with
babies when they are around 7 to 8 months. Typically around 8 to 9 months, babies will start producing
the signs that you have shown them.
Every day, your infant’s primary caregiver will teach basic signs such as “more,”
“drink,” and “please.” By helping your baby to communicate her needs before
she’s able to speak, signing will make her happier and fuel her desire for other
forms of communication.
